ASMR meaning Explained; What is ASMR?

The digital world is usually the first one to catch on to new trends or make its own. ASMR falls in the latter category and people these days have been obsessed with ASMR videos. It is a fairly new trend but one that has gotten insanely popular in a short span of time. By now you are probably wondering what is it exactly? Time to look at: ASMR meaning explained:

What is ASMR?

So. what does it mean? ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian response) is a sensation or feeling that people get when they watch content that stimulates them. It can be a sensation of relaxation or tingling. That sensation differs for everyone as some people may not have the same experience with such content. Unless you have experienced it yourself, you won’t grasp what sensation I am talking about.

How do you experience ASMR?

The sensation can be experienced in two different ways:

  1. Medvitation/Visualisation

People who meditate on a regular basis are no strangers to this sensation. Since meditation puts you in a deeply relaxed state, it heightens your sensory response to pleasure and you can experience the sensation in such a state.

  1. Listening to recordings or watching videos

This is the most common method and the main reason why ASMR videos have gained so much traction recently. These videos can contain the most ordinary daily tasks, however, they create a sensation that people experience.

The videos can contain:

  • Whispering
  • Eating
  • Massaging
  • Humming sounds
  • Scratching
  • Tapping
  • Hair brushing
  • Various sounds made with the mouth
  • Roleplay

Yes, the content has the most ordinary tasks however these people do it with such a technique that it creates that sensation in the person who’s watching the video. People who are new to it might at first not understand what is happening and why it’s happening but once they have the same sensory experience, ASMR videos start to make sense.

Can it be beneficial?

There has been an ongoing debate on whether it is just a millennial trend or if it actually has some benefits. Anyone who is on the other side of this debate and says that it doesn’t make sense to them simply hasn’t experienced ASMR. People have benefited from it immensely and here is how.

  1. Reduces stress and anxiety

Such content is consumed to decrease stress and anxiety. People who watch ASMR videos find it satisfying and it helps them relax. People have even gone so far as to use ASMR in their meditating practices.

  1. Boosts mood

Of course, if your stress levels are at a low then your mood will automatically improve. Watching such videos helps people in feeling good and gives them a mood uplift.

  1. Can help in improving sleep

It creates a sensation so calm that most people watch such videos or listen to audios before bed. The sensation puts one in such a meditative state that a lot of people who have insomnia make use of this.

While there is much research to be done, till now ASMR has shown promising results and will probably do so in the future as well.
